Pingtan’s magnificent scenery is mainly consisted of the vast ocean and uncanny looking rock formations. The mountains of Pingtan are surrounded by the bodies of water to form a series of breathtaking landforms created by years of erosion. Among these landforms, Mount Nanzhai, located in Shanli Village of Beicuo Town, is a rocky mountain that rose and evolved from an underwater cavern millions of years ago.
Mount Nanzhai is a witness to the evolution of the island, from a prehistoric seabed in the depths of the ocean to the populated island city as it is today. Nanzhai’s landforms today are concentrated at the peak of the ountain namely Crocodile Peak, Fairy Peak, Sheep Peak, Condor Peak and Frog Peak. There is also a valley with a mythical name called Turtle God Peak. That is where the name ‘Grand Garden of Stone Scenery’ or ‘World of Stone Animals’ came from.
The rocks of Nanzhai Mountain have been washed by the waves, wind, rain, and the sun for centuries, to have finally formed the unique sea erosion landform today. Here, the granite is densely arrayed like a forest, with odd caves hidden in heavy woods.
Hiking up the mountainous path, you will enjoy the wonderful rock scenery along the way, especially the elephant-shaped rock in Mount Nanzhai. With its unique and interesting life-like shape, the elephant-shaped rock has become a rare ecological beauty for Pingtan’s tourism development.
