Decoding the Caigentan by Prof. Duh Bau-Ruei

Pingtan Net | Updated:2019-04-23

The 10th Cross-Straits Guoxue Lecture was given by Dr. Duh Bau-Ruei from Taiwan University, who is also a Distinguished Professor of the School of Humanities, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, on the evening of April 22 in Pingtan.

Caigentan, literally translated as "Vegetable Roots Discourse", is a compilation of Chinese ancient wisdom from Confucianism and Taoism by great sages like Confucius, Mencius, Lao Zi and Zhuangzi.  Like the name of the book, plainly straight but metaphorically intriguing, the doctrines of Caigentan emphasize on the simplicity of life. Hence,  the title of “Vegetable Roots” is mostly used to metaphorize an allegory of a wise man with simple tastes and much indifference to worldly distractions.

Prof. Duh Bau-Ruei is giving a lecture on the Caigentan in Pingtan.

"Caigentan helps us cope with everyday life and give back to society. For those with vision, it provides them with wisdom and a pragmatic approach to life, like a bible or a tactical combat gear," said Prof. Duh Bau-Ruei.

Duh introduced that the book is a treasure house of life wisdom, featuring eight respective themes.

Q & A session

Xu Daohong, a student from Taiwan, expressed his passion for Guoxue, or the study of ancient Chinese culture. He claims that despite having read many books of this kind, he feels paradoxically hollow in mind, wondering how to apply these wisdom into his daily life and break free from grudges.

Professor responded that being helpful is the key. Dr. Du added, it is good to be conscientious but ideally it is more important to put those thoughts into action. He stressed specifically on being caring, putting scenarios where a helping hand can be lent generously to anyone in need to make the day better.

“How can we see through people in disguise?” asked another audience.

Du replied insightfully, " If the state of mind is at unrest, then the sight will be clouded. Instead of trying to read others, wouldn't it be better to focus your mind and clarify your heart? Once, you are at peace with yourself, then you will be able to see things around you more clearly."

The lecture has attracted a total of 1.8 million viewers on social media. Check the Facebook replay by scanning the QR code below.
