Pingtan contestant stands out in global calligraphy competition

On Nov. 9, the 4th Global Chinese Calligraphy Competition for Teenagers  was held in Xuancheng City of east China’s Anhui province, which is also home to the “Four Chinese Treasures of Study” (i.e.,writing brush, ink stick, ink slab and paper). You Yue, aged 13 from Pingtan, Fujian province, competed in the finals and carried off the honor “Star of Tomorrow” for brush pen group. And Wu Yunlian, You’s supervisor, was also awarded the title of “Excellent Mentor”.

More than 100 teenagers from around the world including China, Canada, France, Malaysia and Japan participated in the competition.

You Yue said in an interview that she had joined a number of calligraphy competitions organized by her school. She was confident in her selected work for the global competition after a month of preparation.

Starting her learning of calligraphy in the first grade of primary school, You Yue has developed a solid foundation for calligraphy and pocketed numerous honors in competitions. But this event has special significance for her. The venue- Xuancheng City, home to the “Four Chinese Treasures of Study”, gave her not only a deep understanding of the artistic charm of calligraphy, but also deepened her understanding and interest in calligraphy culture.

"I hope she can make progress and broaden her horizons in every competition she attends," said Cao Xiaohong, Yue’s parent, who holds great expectation for her daughter and also the mission to spread the Chinese heritage of calligraphy.

The global competition is co-sponsored by China Central Television (CCTV), the National Association of Education for Calligraphy and Painting, and China International Culture Exchange Center. The total number of applicants exceeds 100,000, covering more than 200 cities in more than 20 countries.
