The mysterious Celestial Well

The Celestial Well, also called the Paradise of the East China Sea, is a major tourist attraction on Pingtan island, a natural marine cave eroded by sea water, which looks like a giant cylindrical well dug into the core of the earth. Folklore says that it is the place where Tieguai Li, a crippled celestial in a Chinese mythology the Eight Immortals, once dug the earth to drink from while riding the clouds above Pingtan. Today, tourism thrives on the very spot. As the mascot of Celestial Well, many handicrafts shops feature Tieguai Li.
