High-speed rail a leg-up for tourism on Pingtan Island

Now high-speed rail is the most convenient means of travel. According to the statistics of the railway department, Pingtan Railway Station received over 10,000 passengers on the first day of the five-day May Day holiday, the highest passenger flow on a single day since the operation of the Fuzhou-Pingtan Railway.

A helicopter lifted off on May 1 at Longwantou Bathing Beach and flew at low altitude along the coastline of Pingtan Island. Through the glass porthole, the beautiful scenery of Longwangtou, Tannan Bay, and Trunk Bay came into sight. “You’re so beautiful, Pingtan International Tourism Island!” Mr. Li, a tourist from Sanming city exclaimed inside the copter.

Heli-tour was introduced in Pingtan for the first time. The move comes after Pingtan launched a cruise ship last year for marine tourism. Hence a new travel pattern of “land, sea, and air” has taken shape.

Pingtan’s railway was opened to traffic at the end of December last year. It provides the most convenient means of transportation for tourists from all over the country to visit Pingtan. In April this year, the first tourist-dedicated train arrived in Pingtan. 500 sightseers set foot on Pingtan Island and toured around the island for two days. They marveled at the landscape of Pingtan. “Over a hundred such trains will come this year,” said Weng Bin, deputy director of Tourism, Culture and Sports Bureau of Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone.

After waiting for 3 years, businessman Lin Yi from Putian city finally started his business venture in Dalian Islet of Pingtan. His restaurant officially opened during the May Day holiday, while B&B is due to open this July, a peak period for tourism.

Dalian is a satellite islet of Pingtan Island. An interchange linked to the Pingtan Strait Rail-Road Bridge on December 1, 2019. Unprecedented opportunities arise and high-profile projects come one after another. The ongoing project“ Strait Love Island” is aimed at building an international tourist resort in Dalian.

Stepping into the "high-speed rail era", Pingtan's homestay industry is booming. Chen Qiang, owner of a homestay hotel at Tanshui Village said that thanks to the high-speed rail, an endless stream of tourists swarm into the village, driving the accommodation business to thrive. This year, the business volume during the May Day holiday doubled over the same period last year.

This year, Pingtan set a new goal for tourism that a total of 65 tourism projects worth 85.193 billion yuan will be launched, and it is planned to complete an aggregated investment of 69.448 billion yuan for the following five years.
