The first undersea water pipeline was laid on May 9, part of efforts to carry water to Pingtan, an island city off E China’s Fujian province.
The project approved for construction by the Ministry of Water Resources in 2017 aims to transfer water from neighboring Yongtai county to Pingtan.
The construction of the 13.55-kilometer-Pingtan section is expected to be completed by the end of this year with an estimated investment amounting to 704 million yuan, among which it involves a sea-crossing section spanning 4.201 kilometers, and needs a total of over 1,300 steel tubes with a design service life of 50 years.
The project is designed to supply 750,000 tons per day once completed.
