Pingtan deepens agricultural exchanges and cooperation with Taiwan

Reporters of China News Service learned from the Administrative Committee of Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone on May 22 that recently, Pingtan issued an action plan for boosting rural revitalization and stepping up agricultural and rural modernization.

The plan highlights deepening agricultural exchanges and cooperation with Taiwan. Pingtan is the closest place on the Chinese mainland to the island of Taiwan. It has been designated to pilot cross-Straits integration.

In recent years, Pingtan has been exploring new paths for cross-Straits agricultural integration and development. The introduction of Taiwan-funded agricultural enterprises is a case in point.

Since the end of December 2021, Kunhu Village of Pingtan has been collaborating with Taiwan-invested Xinxi Agricultural Technology Co. on an agricultural feat. Today, the peanut fields in Kunhu have been transformed into a pitaya orchard serving multiple purposes: plantation, production, processing, and even fruit-picking tours.

Lin Sufang, an agriculture PhD from Taiwan was busy instructing workers in the orchard. Lin told the reporters that the first batch of 1.67 hectares of pitaya fields growing more than 25,000 seedlings of 5 varieties would be the first to produce two crops at the end of this year. This pitaya harvest will most likely peak in 2 to 3 years.

Kunhu Village is taking advantage of its local agricultural resources and utilizing Taiwan's sophisticated agricultural technology to realize a new way of agricultural development that’s characterized by cross-Straits cooperation.

There are 100,000 Phalaenopsis, Oncidium, and Dendrobium Taiwan-imported seedlings in a greenhouse of Haitan District of Pingtan.

Xiao Liwu, technical director of Pingtan Yizong Fujian-Taiwan Agricultural Development Co said that Pingtan’s climate is close to that of Taiwan and suitable for orchid growth. The company introduced different varieties of orchids in different periods, which not only facilitates experimentation, but also extends the sales period of orchids.

Pingtan Port was approved as a designated port for imported seedlings in June 2018. Benefiting from the construction of Pingtan's imported seedling nursery, a main passageway for import and export closest to Taiwan is finally coming down the pipeline. This will help achieve in-depth agricultural collaboration across the Straits.

Last month, Pingtan issued 15 specific measures to accelerate the construction of a Fujian-Taiwan industrial park in the field of agriculture and fishery. Among them, it proposes to establish a plant seedling isolation nursery, and priority was given to earmarking special funds and subsidies.

At present, Fujian Province has approved the establishment of Pingtan Fujian-Taiwan Agricultural Integration Development (Agriculture and Fisheries) Industrial Park. Pingtan has introduced 13 Taiwan-funded agricultural enterprises , and 7 projects have landed in the industrial park. The "15 Measures for Agriculture and Fisheries" will further expand the effect of industrial park construction.
