In the golden autumn season, the pitaya base of Pingtan Cross-Straits Fuyuan Ecological Agriculture Technology Co., Ltd., ushered in a bumper harvest.
On Sept.22, reporters from Pingtan CMC visited the pitaya base. Chairman Lin Longqing was zipping in and out of the warehouse. Just as a new batch of pitayas ripened, every single fruit was gone! The company shipped up to 200 cartons of pitayas on a day. Back and forth, a tricycle loaded with pitayas was shuttling between the field and the warehouse. The staff was busy picking, selecting, grading, and packing the fresh pitayas. "We can't take in any more orders. We are simply running short on supply!" Lin Longqing said.
Out in the fields, rows of cactus-shaped fruit trees stand in orderly rows. Picking employees, each carrying a large pail, were harvesting pitayas with scissors. When the pail was full, it was transferred to the warehouse on a tricycle.
“We started picking from 5 or 6 in the morning. Three or four workers can reap about 2,000 kilograms a day,” staff member Wang Kaijin introduced, while peeling a ripe fruit to show the reporters. The flesh is rich, juicy and sweet.
According to Lin Longqing, the pitaya variety at the base was from Taiwan. It can produce 11 crops a year. May to December is the peak production season, during which new batches of fruits can be harvested every 15-20 days.
“The active demand further testifies consumers’ trust for our quality.” Lin Longqing noted that the credit goes to the sandy soil of Pingtan.
Lin Longqing said that apart from the pitaya, sugar apples and oranges from Taiwan that were trial-planted at the base are also ready for the harvest.
