Kiteboarders pictured training for the upcoming international competition in Pingtan

The 9th Pingtan International Kiteboarding Competition is scheduled to be held in early November at Pingtan’s Longwangtou, one of the largest natural bathing beaches in China.

Since 2012, Pingtan has hosted eight international kiteboarding competitions, including Kiteboard Tour Asian (KTA), Professional Kiteboard Riders Association (PKRA) world tour, and Kiteboarding World Cup. 

“More than 130 contestants have signed up, including over 20 athletes from the U.K., Russia, France, and other countries. The deadline for registration is Oct.25,” said Lin Wenliang, vice president of Pingtan Kiteboard Association, a co-organizer of this year’s competition.

Wang Yuncheng from E China’s Zhejiang province is one of the contestants. His bronze skin and toned muscles camouflage his age. “I’ll soon be a sexagenarian, and the sports keep me young,” he beamed.  

Years back, Wang Yuncheng was on holiday in Vietnam and saw the beautiful scenery and kiteboarding competitions of Pingtan on Youtube. Every year, he spends over half a year enjoying the sports in Pingtan.

Wang Yuncheng said that he has been to many kiteboarding locations at home and abroad, before settling down in Pingtan. "Pingtan's wind conditions are unparalleled, and it is perfect for kiteboarding," said Wang.
