As of 24:00 on Nov. 11, this year’s “Double Eleven” shopping festival in China, Pingtan hit a record high. About 1.867 million orders for cross-border e-commerce (CBEC) goods were made compared with single digit in 2017 when Pingtan joined the carnival for the first time.

Facial masks and sunscreens are this year's bestsellers at the bonded warehouse, while adult milk formulas are next in line. Beauty products have become the No.1 commodity in Pingtan Bonded Warehouse due to the island's pre-emptive policy encouraging the logistic placement of small beauty items and Fast-Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) during its earlier days.

Zhang Shufu, deputy director of the Commercial and Logistics Department of the Economic Development Bureau of Pingtan, said the early layout in the category helps Pingtan become competitive in the industry. Cross-border e-commerce export will become the next “trump card”.

"From testing the waters to bulk stocking, the warehouse has won over the trust of merchants over the years," said Lin Fangfang, manager of the logistics department of Fujian KJT Cross-Border E-Commerce Co.

"Efficient customs clearance and smooth logistics, coupled with cost efficiency are the main factors contributing to the expansion of Pingtan's cross-border e-commerce industry." Zhang Shufu also said that the bureau would look at new development models for the industry, take on pharmaceutical imports, and explore on "bonded import + deep processing + diversified sales" model.
