Pingtan was crowned as one of China's top ten sports tourism destinations at the 2021 Sports Culture Expo and Sports Tourism Expo. This marks the fifth consecutive year for the rising international island to receive the accolade, according to the Tourism, Culture, and Sports Bureau of Pingtan.

Promoting China’s sports tourism program is part of activities in the two expos. This year, over 700 programs participated in the competitions. 53 were shortlisted, and specifications like categories of scenic areas, tourist lines, sports events, sports tourism destinations were selected. Pingtan is the only area in Fujian Province that is named one of the top ten destinations for sports tourism in China in 2021.

In recent years, Pingtan has hosted international kitesurfing tournaments, international cycling tournaments, national beach volleyball tournaments, national open water swims, and the cross-Straits baseball invitationals. Out of all these tournaments, the National Beach Volleyball Tournament For Elites and Tournament (Pingtan Leg) won the title "2021 China Sports Tourism Boutique Competition".
