9th cross-Straits taekwondo competition held in Pingtan
en.ptnet.cn | Updated:2021-12-08The 9th Cross-Straits (Pingtan) Taekwondo Exchange Match commenced on Dec. 5, in Pingtan, Chinese mainland’s closest neighbor of Taiwan. 506 Taekwondo players of 26 teams from both sides of the Taiwan Straits sparred in the friendly match.

Taking place in Pingtan and Taiwan at the same time, the match was supported virtually through real-time video.
“This time we have to compete online due to Covid. Nevertheless, it is a great opportunity for a friendly spar with players from the mainland,” said Yang Yuanheng, the vice-chairman of the Taiwan Taekwondo Movement Athletics Association when the video was connected.

Since 2012, the Cross-Straits Taekwondo Exchange Competition has been held for nine consecutive years. It aims to use Taekwondo competitions to create a platform for cross-Straits non-governmental sports and cultural exchanges and to continuously enhance the friendship between the compatriots on both sides of the Straits.

The event was hosted by the Tourism, Culture and Sports Bureau of Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone and the Taiwan Taekwondo Movement Athletics Association.
