Pingtan, the closest place on the Chinese mainland to the island of Taiwan, has been designated as the pioneer zone for cross-Straits integration. In 2021, the import of agricultural and fishery products to Taiwan and the export of cross-border e-commerce to Taiwan took up over 50 percent of the mainland’s total. To foster a conducive and friendly environment for Taiwan businesses and talents in Pingtan, supportive policies centered on loans, healthcare, and emergency relief fund were introduced. 2022's work plan puts forth continuous efforts to forge an international tourist destination thriving on music, arts, and sports.
In 2021, Pingtan set up several national and provincial sports tourism and leisure bases, tourist towns, and tourist villages. It received an estimated 6.5 million person-time of tourists throughout the year, a year-on-year increase of 41.6%.

Pingtan has been blazing trails and exploring applicable standards across the Taiwan Straits. It took the lead in building a comprehensive validation system for Taiwan's professional certificates, corporate qualifications, and commodity inspections. An aggregated 118 pro-Taiwan policies have been rolled out, including 56 initiatives on the mainland, 13 promoted across the mainland, and 4 rated as the best practice in the free trade zones across the mainland.
