Local citizens and visitors poured in to enjoy the intangible cultural heritage and basked in the festive ambiance during the Chinese New Year. Pingtan is an island city off the coast of Fujian Province and China's second international tourism island.

Taiwan-themed Town was decked out in fiery-red lanterns. More than ten intangible cultural heritage items such as Pingtan Nursery Rhyme, Cane Shield Exercise, Pingtan Pinghua (a local story-telling genre), Pingtan Shell Carving, Lingshang Longevity Noodle, and Pingtan Medicinal Rice Paste (a local medicinal tonic) were exhibited, dazzling the spectators.

At the exhibition area, Pingtan Shell Carving inheritors were helping visitors put together a “Birthday Peach” and experience assembling and carving.

At the Pingtan Medicinal Rice Paste booth, visitors had fun trying out the pestle and mortar, measuring, and grinding Chinese herbs.

As soon as a fragrant pot of piping hot Lingshang Longevity Noodle came off the stove, a group of smiling girls in Hanfu (traditional Chinese apparel) gushed in to sample the divine dish. The girls were all smiles and praises for the noodle.

At the performance area, the performers of Fujian Opera, with their delicate voices, gestures, and facial expressions, attracted a host of fans.

Haitan Ancient Town is also a popular tourist spot in the new year. The 8th Cross-Straits Folk Culture and Tourism Festival in the scenic area rolled out a series of programs, including folk song and dance tours, Gaoshan nationality performances, and intangible cultural heritage performances, scheduled from 9:00 am to 7:30 pm of the first day to the seventh day of the first lunar month.

The Town was filled with shops and tourists. Walking around, visitors found themselves entertained by an array of exciting performances and a great selection of authentic snacks.

Many tourists said that the Spring Festival celebrations in Pingtan are just as promising as the temple fairs in most metropolitans.

In addition to local delicacies, the tourism complex also gathers traditional folk handicrafts from all over the country, such as candied haws and sugar paintings.

At Kaiminfang Plaza, dancers from Taiwan’s ethnic group Gaoshan led citizens and tourists to form a circle, singing, dancing, and laughing.
