en.ptnet.cn | Updated:2022-02-18 | Lin Kongbo Stephanie

“Wind coming, wind coming...” Dozens of strong men hoisted the sail in unison, racing the wind in an open field on the evening of Feb.15. This is the annual lantern kite flying ritual in Minzhu Village, Pingtan, an island city off the coast of Fujian province.

Accompanied by firecrackers, boisterous gongs, and flamboyant fireworks, the villagers sent their new year wishes to heaven.

In the olden days, Minzhu village was also called Yuyu Village. With this, lantern kites are also known as Yuyu Lantern Kite. Now, Yuyu Lantern Kite has been named an intangible cultural heritage in Pingtan.
