Pingtan to increase direct shipping to Taiwan

“Lufeng”, the first cross-Straits container ship registered in Pingtan, the closest place on the mainland to the island of Taiwan, was sailing to Taipei port with goods of general trade and cross-border e-commerce aboard at 10 o’clock on the evening of March 7.

According to Huang Hui, manager of the container department of Fujian Strait High-Speed Passenger Ro-Ro Shipping Co., Ltd., the operator of the "Lufeng" ship, since the opening of the freighter route, Pingtan's general trade volume has seen a drastic hike. This has caught the attention of many logistics supply chain, trading, and high-tech companies.

According to statistics, cross-border e-commerce took up more than 95% of shipments from Pingtan to Taiwan in the past. However, this also limits the outward extension of Pingtan's logistics chain to Taiwan. Therefore, the "Lufeng" opened up a new way to provide services for general trade enterprises across the country. "Our main exports in general trades are beer, raw materials, and daily supplies,” said Huang Hui.

Data shows that about 1,200 TEUs of general trade commodities have been shipped since the maiden voyage, accounting for 57% of the total trips. The number of shipments will increase up to three times a week.

Lin Yongsheng, deputy general manager of Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone Port Development Co., Ltd., said that Pingtan is striving to build a brand featuring cross-Straits logistics and broaden international routes.
