Pingtan, a rising international tourism island in China received 310,140 tourists, raking in about 240, 72 million yuan during the recent May Day holiday. The average number of tourists was 62,000 and the maximum number of tourists received in a single day exceeded 100,000. "Affected by the Covid-19 and the undesirable weather, the number of tourists has decreased compared with last year. But judging from the general overlook, we did better than expected," said Wu Yunping, an official from the Tourism, Culture and Sports Bureau of Pingtan.

Glamping heated up during the holiday. Tents have sprung up at scenic spots, villages, and outskirts of Pingtan.

Families with children enjoyed quality time camping, chilling to live band performances, and grilling by the BBQ pit at Tannan Bay. “Great scenery and experience,” said Chen Xingyu, a tourist from neighboring Putian City.

Creative music and marine sports have also become the new fad.

After the recent "facelift," Pingtan's Tannan Bay was "lit" in the evening with crazy crowds and music parties. A music plaza, observation decks, a cafe, a folk tavern, and a new restaurant are some new additions at Tannan Bay. While at Longwangtou Bathing Beach, the Urban Music Lounge became a nightlife hotspot for the fashionmongers in town. The 68 Black Reef Music Expo Hall held an exhibition for Taiwan's Top 100 Records, attracting music lovers from both sides of the Straits to immerse in the history of Chinese pop music. Motorboats, speedboats, banana boats, and other marine sports allow tourists to feel the adrenaline rush. Statistics reveal that music and sports experience bases such as 68-Nautical-Mile Town, Tannan Bay, and Longwangtou Bathing Beach attracted approximately 90,000 tourists in 5 days, accounting for 30% of the total.

In addition, the cultural and tourism products with local features have also fueled the popularity of the tourism market. The first Pingtan Cross-Straits Flower Festival was held at Taiwan-themed Town of Pingtan. Tourists could try their hand at lampbrella painting and enjoy a Hanfu parade. The intangible cultural heritage performances like Ciming Opera and Cane Shield Exercise were staged at iconic scenic areas to enrich the cultural connotation of Pingtan as a rising international tourism island, create Pingtan’s cultural brand, and beckon tourists.
