Pingtan’s annual GDP growth averaged 9.3% in the past decade

The gross domestic product (GDP) of Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone, the closest place on the mainland to the island of Taiwan has registered an average growth of 9.3% annually, released in a recent press conference hosted by the Provincial Publicity Department of E China’s Fujian on June 27.

Lai Jun, secretary of the Party Working Committee of Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone, briefed on the achievements of Pingtan from five aspects: infrastructure construction, cross-Straits integration, reform and innovation, ecological protection, and people’s well-being.

Infrastructure Construction

The aggregated investment over the past ten years has exceeded 150 billion yuan. The construction includes Pingtan Strait Rail-Road Bridge, the world’s longest sea-crossing rail-road bridge and the first of its kind in the country.

Cross-Straits Integration

Pingtan has taken the lead on the mainland to achieve full coverage of direct passenger and cargo shipping to major ports in northern, central, and southern Taiwan. The number of registered Taiwan-funded enterprises has increased from 11 to nearly 1,300, with a total investment of 47.11 billion yuan. Pingtan has become one of the trading hubs across the Straits. The imports of Taiwan's agricultural and fishery products, Taiwan's panel imports, and cross-border e-commerce exports to Taiwan account for more than 50%, 20%, and 50% of the total on the mainland.

Reform and Innovation

A total of 18 batches of 221 reform measures have been rolled out, of which 102 were initiated in the country, 13 of which were promoted by the State Council nationwide. 4 were selected as the best cases in the country. 95% of administrative approvals can be processed at all-in-one service counters.

Ecological Protection

Accumulated 67,222 hectares of trees have been planted and the forest coverage rate increased from 29% to 38.71%. The comprehensive air quality index has ranked first among districts and cities for 7 consecutive years in the province.

People’s Well-being

Pingtan branch of Fujian Medical University Union Hospital, Fujian Polytechnic of Information Technology, and Pingtan Affiliated High School of Fujian Normal University have been built one after another. The average annual growths of per capita disposable income of urban and rural residents were 8.6% and 10.1%, respectively.
