He Shoujian: Serenading Pingtan

en.ptnet.cn | Updated:2022-07-19 | Lin Kongbo, Stephanie

He Shoujian is a native of Pingtan. He is a well-known musician, a national first-class sound engineer, and an associate professor at Beijing Contemporary Music Academy.

Although He had long moved away from home, his heart still lingers in his hometown. His hometown complex has brought him back on many occasions to compose and sing songs about Pingtan.

Today, let's delve into the glorious 20 years of this musical talent.

Initially, he got admitted as an international trade student at Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications. However, he found that he was not interested in this major not long after the school opened. The idea of learning music lingered on in his mind.

Good Mandarin pronunciation is a prerequisite for singing. He, who is from southern China, does not have an advantage.  The enterprising He drew out a rigid study plan. “My dormmates spoke better Mandarin, so I learned from them and asked them to help correct my pronunciation.” He finally made it in less than a year.

After making up for his shortcomings, He devoted more to vocal training. He participated in various competitions for self-improvement. "Speaking of a lasting impression, He brought out an episode of his music journey with SETV's Milky Way Star Arena. "In the competition, I recalled clearing scores of challenges. I am happy with the results," He said with a smile.

In the competition, he learned that many didn't receive professional training, yet they continued singing- solely out of a passion for music. It occurred to him that he could lend a hand. In the end, He became a vocal music teacher.

“It makes me happy that I am doing what I love,” said He.

The track Girl and Monk in Love was released in November 2018. The view counts exceeded 10 billion online in more than a year.

Who would have thought that the man behind the pop singer Fan Next Door, a top favorite of NetEase Cloud Music, is He Shoujian?

In addition to Fan Next Door, Roy Wang from popular Chinese idol group TFBoys, Su Yunying, Ma Ke, and many other entertainers are all vocal students of He Shoujian.

He collaborated with celebrities such as eminent lyricist Vincent Fang from Taiwan, mainland’s actress Ning Jing, singer Reno Wang, and singer Allen Lin. He also served as vocal music director for Chinese reality television singing programs like The Voice of China, Sing My Song, and Chinese Idol.

The nostalgic song Hometown Pingtan created in 2020 sings praises for the gorgeous landscape of Pingtan. The singer is He Shoujian.

“I want to sing for my hometown. Every time I sing songs about Pingtan, I feel an upsurge of emotion and can’t help using ‘voice’ to contribute to my hometown,” said He Shoujian.

He also set up a music association to round up local singers and enthusiasts alike in Pingtan. “We plan to hold an original singing contest in Pingtan to discover talents. Encourage them to create works and promote the scenery and culture of Pingtan,” said He Shoujian.
