Shamei Village of Pingtan recently made it to the headlines after it was named an exemplary village by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs. A village enclave by waters blessed with excellent geographical conditions and a smooth current makes it the perfect ground for abalone farming.
Li Zunshun, secretary of the CPC branch of Shamei Village, introduced that there are more than 300 abalone farmers in the village, with a total output of 17,000 tons worth 1.7 billion yuan.
On the abalone farm of Zheng Erfu, approximately 50 workers are feeding theshellfish. Zheng has been breeding abalone since 2004. Now, he owns a total of 60,000 cages. “Two harvests in a year, and we could generate millions of profit,” said Zheng.
A stone's throw away, it's the turf of another man. Having believed in the prospect of abalone breeding in 2009, Ding Jianwu, a migrant worker outside, decided to return home to restart his career. "Now, I possess 700 cages with a million annual turnover."
In addition, Shamei Village has employed additional 2,000 workers from out of the village thanks to the booming aquaculture industry.
