The Economic Daily released a periodic survey of the top 100 emerging small-medium cities for investment in China, one among many of its economic periodicals to wrap up 2022. Pingtan made it to the top 100 dynamic cities and counties for investment.

Pingtan is an island off E China’s Fujian province and the closet place on the mainland to the island of Taiwan. In 2009, Pingtan was designated as the only pilot zone on the mainland for the cross-Straits integration, mapping out a blueprint of a common homeland for compatriots on both sides. China inaugurated the Pingtan area of the China (Fujian) Pilot Free Trade Zone in 2015, aiming to build a free port. Pingtan is known for its rich natural tourism resources, such as superior sand beaches and sea erosion landforms. In 2016, the State Council approved a plan that would see Pingtan’s development as an international tourism island, the second after Hainan in China.
