The construction of Pingtan Haitan Strait Underwater Archaeological Park commences. The project aims to preserve and revitalize cultural relics, facilitate academic exchange, and promote knowledge and research-oriented tourism. Pingtan is an island off the coast of E China's Fujian province and a state-approved international tourism island.
Pingtan's Haitan Strait is blessed with rich underwater relics. As early as May 2013, the Pingtan Haitan Strait Underwater Site was rated as the seventh batch of "Key National Cultural Relics Protection Units, the first of its kind on the mainland coast. At present, 11 shipwreck sites have been confirmed in the waters, dating back from the Five Dynasties (907-960 AD) to the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1912). It is the most densely distributed and diverse area of wreck sites along the mainland coast, yielding significant influence on Chinese underwater archaeology and research on the Maritime Silk Road.
The underwater archaeological site will also be a highlight of Pingtan's cultural tourism. "In terms of integrating culture and tourism, our design focuses on the display of culture and the interaction with visitors, creating a special cultural activity space to bring visitors closer to the archaeological site. We will convey the value of underwater culture," said Liu Sunying, a manager of Pingtan Culture Tourism Construction Development Co., Ltd.
