Political leaders from the Pacific Islands, led by Tongan Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Justice Samiu Vaipulu, arrived on April 23 in Pingtan on a diplomatic visit.

The foreign guests of honor were warmly received by Ke Zhizhong, director of the Information Compilation and Research Office of the International Liasion Department of the Central Committee of the CPC, Chen Guoquan, deputy director of the Fujian Provincial Foreign Affairs Office, and Wu Liyuan, deputy secretary of the Party Working Committee of Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone.

Fujian is a vital trail to uncovering the mystery of the Austronesian origin and its relation with the Pacific Islands. The delegation visited Pingtan International Research Center for Austronesian Archaeology where they learned about the early civilizations on the coast of Southeast China, the global migration of the Austronesians, Pingtan's Maritime Silk Road, and the region's Austronesian culture. The visit also shed light on Fujian and Taiwan's superlative lineage, extending back since the advent of time. The guests also attended a symposium at the Island Research Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources based in Pingtan.

At the symposium, Zhang Haifeng, director of the Island Research Center, briefed on the center's years of achievements in scientific research and international cooperation. A joint project for a marine disaster prevention center was also part of the agenda.

Renbo Payita, minister of Finance of Papua New Guinea, stated they had witnessed China's technological development and how the nation eradicated poverty with sustainable development. The delegate also expressed admiration for the commendable feat and hoped to deepen future cooperation between China and Pacific Island countries.
