Pingtan ranks third in popular destinations for 2023 May Day holiday

Pingtan Island, located off the coast of E China’s Fujian province and the closest place on the Chinese mainland to Taiwan, experienced a significant boost in tourism during the five-day May Day holiday. The island received 678,300 visitors, a year-on-year increase of 118.7%, generating total tourism revenue of 547 million yuan, a surge of 127.9% compared to the previous year, according to the Pingtan Tourism, Culture, and Sports Bureau.

Tourists had a myriad of activities to choose from, including chasing sea sparkles at Longwangtou Bathing Beach, viewing offshore wind turbines at the Northern Ecological Corridor, beachcombing at Changjiang’ao Bay, and surfing at Tannan Bay, allowing them to indulge in the leisurely island life. Visitors also had the opportunity to experience the thrill of go-karting, immerse themselves in the rustic charm of the countryside at Zhaiding Village, or enjoy camping and RV vacations.

Pingtan Island also hosted a series of cultural and tourism events, including music festivals, which attracted a total of 210,000 visitors during the holiday.

Pingtan Island's stunning island scenery and the trendy therapeutic offerings contributed to its popularity as a travel destination during the holiday. According to data from Mafengwo, a popular online travel platform in China, Pingtan ranked third among the top ten popular destinations during the holiday and was included in the list of popular scenic spots and self-driving destinations, cementing its position as a must-see destination for tourists.
