Letter from an Unknown Woman took center stage in a spellbinding convergence of music, theater, and literature at Pingtan International Performing Arts Center.

Adapted from Austrian author Stefan Zweig's literary classic of the same name, Letter from an Unknown Woman is a melodrama that unfolds with the arrival of an anonymous letter addressed to a writer on his 41st birthday. The letter reveals the emotional entanglement of a dying woman with whom he had crossed paths in his youth.

Zweig was one of the most celebrated feminist writers of the 20th century. Letter from an Unknown Woman is a masterpiece that delves into the depths of human emotion, standing as a testament to Zweig's talent for pondering on the poignant exploration of love, longing, and the female psyche.

It is not the first time Letter from an Unknown Woman has been adapted into various works in China. In 2005, Chinese director Xu Jinglei turned the story into a film, using a delicate and sincere artistic approach to present her unique interpretation of the original work. Later, director Meng Jinghui adapted the story into a stage play, winning over countless fans.

Now, under visionary director Ren Yuan, the story found a new voice in retelling the tale of love. As a member of the Chinese Musical Association's Creative Professional Committee, Ren said, "As an independent individual, it is incumbent upon us to comprehend and honor the autonomy we hold - in matters of love, life, and choices. Through this musical, I hope the audience can explore the meaning of life and freedom and also appreciate the power exuded by the resplendent female figures who grace this stage."

Letter from an Unknown Woman is a gripping performance executed under stellar acting, amazing casts, cinematic mise-en-scenes, and beautiful musical scores. It is an emotional roller-coaster, a crescendo that climaxes with rising musical scores, sophisticatedly blending in classical music, pop music, and rap elements.

The rose, a significant symbol in the story, was interwoven throughout the musical. The white rose bestowed by the writer to the woman after they spent a night together, serves as a motif, recurring every year on his birthday as a reminder of the forgotten love. The ascending and descending stairs mirror the character's journey through time, as they missed and crossed paths somewhere in time.

Many audience members were moved by the performance. One said, "I got goosebumps watching it. It's passionate and desperate, beautiful yet paranoid. The actors' performances were outstanding." Chen Liyun, an avid fan who faithfully followed the book and other adaptations said, "It is the female lead's indomitable spirit that stands resolute to the vicissitudes of life and her enduring love for her beloved that win me over."
