Pingtan Island to be quenched by "One Gate and Three Lines" project
en.ptnet.cn | Updated:2023-07-13 | Lin Kongbo, StephaniePingtan, an island located in the eastern Fujian province of China, is about to overcome its water scarcity challenges with the completion of the "One Gate and Three Lines" water resource allocation project. This project, the largest cross-basin water transfer initiative in Fujian, aims to transfer high-quality water from Dazhangxi, the largest tributary of the Minjiang River, to benefit Pingtan and the southern bank of the Minjiang River, ultimately benefiting approximately 5.8 million people.
Thirty-Six-Feet Lake
A key focus of this project is the Thirty-Six-Feet Lake situated on Pingtan Island, which serves as a vital source of freshwater for the island's residents. However, due to the island's economic growth and population increase, the lake's freshwater resources have been rapidly depleting, posing a significant challenge. To combat this issue, Pingtan has been relying on freshwater from the neighboring Fuqing's Beilin Reservoir, capable of supplying up to 80,000 cubic meters of water per day.
Nevertheless, the completion of the "One Gate and Three Lines" project will provide Pingtan with an additional 7 million cubic meters of high-quality water from the Dazhangxi River. This substantial increase in water supply will effectively address the island's freshwater scarcity and ensure that it can fulfill its water needs even during times of high demand.
As the project nears completion, Pingtan and its residents anticipate reaping a multitude of benefits. This achievement will mitigate freshwater shortage and foster green urbanization for better livelihoods.
