Escape the heat: Pingtan emerges as a popular summer getaway
en.ptnet.cn | Updated:2023-07-14 | Lin Kongbo, StephanieSummer crowds flock to Pingtan, a coastal city in southeast Fujian province, as the country enters the dog days of summer. Reflecting the soaring temperatures, "rising temperature" and "Pingtan" have become popular trends on the internet. While most cities across China swelter under the scorching heat, Pingtan maintains a lower and more comfortable temperature.
According to the Pingtan Meteorological Bureau, the highest recorded temperature has remained below 35℃, making Pingtan an ideal destination to escape the heat. In contrast, numerous regions in Fujian have experienced temperatures surpassing the blistering threshold of 35℃, with Fuzhou even reaching above 40℃.
As a coastal city, Pingtan enjoys a relatively mild summer climate. Over the past decade, the average temperature in Pingtan from June to September has ranged between a comfortable 26.1℃ and 27.7℃. Additionally, the wind levels during this period range from 2 to 4 degrees on the Beaufort scale, providing a refreshing breeze for outdoor activities.
"Due to water's higher heat capacity compared to sand and rocks, it absorbs heat more effectively under similar conditions. Therefore, as a coastal city, Pingtan experiences relatively lower temperatures than inland areas," explained Yu Wenxin, a forecaster at the Pingtan Meteorological Bureau.
The combination of humid air, moderate temperatures, and refreshing sea breezes has attracted numerous tourists to Pingtan during the hot summer months. Scenic areas such as Longwangtou and Tannan Bay, known for their sandy beaches, are particularly popular among visitors. Tourist Zhang Zheng from Wuhan was drawn to Pingtan by its cool weather. "Compared to Wuhan, the weather here in Pingtan is extremely comfortable. I highly recommend coming here for a holiday," Zhang praised.
Returning visitor Zhang Liaoyun, accompanied by his family, chose Pingtan once again this summer to enjoy the island's delightful climate. "Pingtan's weather remains as lovely as ever, and so is the sea. It's a great place for a summer vacation."
