Organized by the Foreign Affairs Office of the People's Government of Fujian Province, the study camp invited 11 students from the University of the South Pacific and young representatives from various regions in Fiji to participate in the activities held in Fujian.
During their stay in Pingtan, the delegation had the opportunity to explore significant archaeological sites and exhibits related to the Austronesian culture. They visited the Shell Mound Sites at Guishan, the Prehistoric Site Exhibition Hall, and the Maritime Silk Road Treasures Exhibition Hall. Through field visits, lectures, and exchanges, the delegates gained a comprehensive understanding of the archaeological achievements in the study of Austronesian culture. They also had the chance to create dragon boat models, allowing them to experience firsthand the maritime history and cultural connections between Pingtan and the Pacific Island nations.
"The purpose of this study camp was to deepen our understanding of Austronesian culture," said Sematoga, one of the student delegates. She expressed her satisfaction with the opportunity to learn about prehistoric sites and precious artifacts, which provided a broader perspective on the cultural origins across the Pacific region. "Being in Pingtan, I have also felt the charm of this beautiful island," she added.
"The preservation of these artifacts and sites is remarkable, as they vividly showcase our history," remarked Taniela, another student delegate. He appreciated the profound cultural connections evident in the exhibited pottery, which resembled those used by his ancestors and present-day residents of Fiji's islands, creating a sense of familiarity and connection with Pingtan.
Additionally, the delegation visited the Yuanxiangyuan Cultural Industry Park in Pingtan Taiwan-themed Town, where they explored traditional Chinese cultural elements such as oil-paper umbrellas and handicrafts. They also had the opportunity to engage in the production of traditional pottery, experiencing the rich heritage and unique charm of Chinese culture. At the Island Research Center of the Ministry of Natural Resources, the delegates showed great interest in visiting the Island Science Popularization Museum and the Island Botanical Specimen Hall. They were able to gain in-depth knowledge about the center's collaborative efforts with Pacific Island countries in island research, marine disaster prevention, blue economy development, and other related fields.
"We are honored to have had this opportunity for cultural exploration and exchange. This study camp has been a fantastic experience, and we look forward to sharing what we have seen, heard, and learned in China with our friends and family in Fiji," expressed Nasoni, a student delegate.
