Pingtan Marathon 2023 concludes with a bang, showcasing the beauty of the island

The highly anticipated “To the Mountains and Seas, All the Way to Xiamen” Marathon in Pingtan, a rising international tourism island in China, came to a triumphant close on October 29, 2023. The event, which marked the first-ever marathon in Pingtan, attracted a staggering number of participants comprising nearly 5,000 runners from various nations, including China, France, Argentina, Ethiopia, Kenya, Thailand, and more.

In a bid to host a professional, chic, and spirited sports extravaganza, the organizers delivered an array of categories for participants to flaunt their skills and determination. These included a full-course marathon (42.195 kilometers), a half-course marathon (21.0975 kilometers), and a brisk 5-kilometer health jog, all set against the backdrop of Pingtan's stunning landscape.

Following intense competition and a display of remarkable athleticism, the race culminated in the crowning of the champions. Zhang Jie, hailing from Gansu province, emerged as the victor in the men's marathon. His exceptional performance, clocking in at an impressive time of 2 hours, 35 minutes, and 7 seconds, secured him the coveted title. Meanwhile, Chala Gurmess Lema from Ethiopia demonstrated exceptional prowess in the men's half marathon, clinching the top spot with a remarkable time of 1 hour, 7 minutes, and 25 seconds.


In the women's division, Ethiopian athletes Chegen Meekes Fekede and Arado Gulume Tekle showcased their strength and endurance. Chegen Meekes Fekede triumphed in the full marathon category, crossing the finish line in an impressive time of 3 hours, 5 minutes, and 29 seconds. Arado Gulume Tekle, on the other hand, claimed victory in the half marathon, completing the course in a swift time of 1 hour, 16 minutes, and 2 seconds.

Runners and participants alike expressed their enthusiasm for the event and praise for the idyllic setting of Pingtan. 

"Pingtan is beautiful and clean, and it was a comfortable run," said Zhang Jie, the men's marathon champion.

"I didn't know much about Pingtan before, but after participating in this race. I completely fell in love with this place. The event was well-planned and excellent," expressed Chala Gurmess Lema, the men's half marathon winner.

The successful organization of the inaugural Pingtan Marathon has not only provided a platform for athletes to showcase their skills but has also positioned Pingtan as a vibrant destination for hosting premier sports. With its picturesque coastal route and the invigorating sea breeze, the marathon seamlessly merged sports and tourism, offering participants a truly memorable experience.
