The National Energy Administration recently announced the list of national pilot demonstration projects for new energy storage, with 56 projects selected nationwide. Among them, Pingta’s Shared Energy Storage Station" stands out as the only project from Fujian Province.
In June 2023, construction on the project commenced. This project is not only the first large-scale centralized shared energy storage station in the province but also boasts the highest individual capacity for an electrochemical energy storage station. Once completed, it will contribute to creating a clean, low-carbon, intelligent, and efficient new power system in Pingtan, while also promoting the development of offshore energy in the region.
Pingtan Energy Storage Technology Co., Ltd. is responsible for the project. Lin Yifan, the company's executive director, stated that the project is scheduled to be connected to the grid and put into operation in 2024. The first phase is expected to have a storage capacity of over 200,000 kilowatt-hours, capable of completing a charging or discharging cycle within two hours.
The station will provide supporting energy storage for Pingtan's offshore wind power industry, facilitating the transformation of Pingtan from being a "fully green-powered island" to becoming an "offshore energy island." It will also contribute to the construction of a new power system and the realization of a "zero-carbon island" in Fujian.
Lin Yifan emphasized that the Pingtan Shared Energy Storage Station has three application scenarios. Firstly, it will enhance the absorption capacity of wind power. Secondly, it will help strengthen the island's power grid. Lastly, it will play a role in regional emergency backup and support.
Officials from Pingtan expressed their commitment to further efforts in shared energy storage, focusing on tasks such as clean energy consumption and energy substitution. Their aim is to contribute to the creation of an "internationally recognized zero-carbon tourist island" and foster sustainable development.
