Steady growth in cross-Straits logistics and trade in Pingtan
en.ptnet.cn | Updated:2024-02-28 | Lin Kongbo, StephanieAs of February 27, 2024, Pingtan has been making solid progress in cross-Straits logistics and trade. During the recent Spring Festival, Cross-Straits Connection (Pingtan) Development Co., Ltd., led by executive director Li Zidian, reported a significant increase in visitors, with around 10,000 people visiting the Duty-Free Store No. 1 daily. This store, located in the Pingtan Taiwan-themed Town and reopened in June 2023, has become a platform for showcasing Taiwan brands, supporting Taiwan entrepreneurs, and promoting cultural exchange. Pingtan is the closest place on the mainland to the island of Taiwan and the only zone on the mainland for comprehensively piloting cross-Straits integration.
Li highlighted the popularity of Taiwan-imported snacks, particularly during the Spring Festival, where visitors like Li Mengting from neighboring province Zhejiang took advantage of duty-free shopping to purchase authentic Taiwan products like pineapple cakes.
According to Li Zidian, the Taiwan products are transported to Pingtan via the container ship "Taipei Express," benefiting from stable and speedy sea freight services taking two to three days for delivery. The development of cross-Straits trade in Pingtan is closely linked to the improvement of cross-Straits logistics channels. In recent years, Pingtan has opened direct shipping routes, providing comprehensive coverage of passenger and cargo shipping to major ports in Taiwan.
Pingtan has also fostered cross-border e-commerce, international express delivery, and international parcel businesses. Notably, 50% of the Chinese mainland' s imports from Taiwan for agricultural and fishery products, 20% of Taiwan' s panel imports, and over 50% of cross-border e-commerce exports to Taiwan are through Pingtan.
Various government authorities in Pingtan have facilitated warehousing, customs clearance, and others, establishing Pingtan Port's logistics brand as "air transport speed, sea transport cost." This logistical advantage, combined with policy support, has instilled confidence in Pingtan's port development.
During this year's Spring Festival, the "Taipei Express" operated at full capacity, with additional voyages, transporting goods from factories from Taiwan to Pingtan, according to Chen Xiangquan, general manager of Huaxin (Pingtan) Logistics Co., Ltd.
Pingtan aims to continue building the main logistics channel for cross-Straits trade, strengthening the layout of new industrial tracks, and enhancing the competitiveness of the modern service industry. Zhang Shufu, deputy director of the Business and Logistics Division of the Economic Development Bureau of Pingtan, emphasized the steady and diverse development of logistics and trade in Pingtan, with plans to ensure continued success in the future.
