A recent video showing a pod of dolphins playfully interacting with a fishing boat near Pingtan, an island off E China’s Fujian province, has garnered significant online attention.

Experts say the dolphins in the video are likely short-beaked common dolphins or Indo-Pacific humpbacked dolphins, both smaller species commonly found in these waters.

Pingtan's location near the deep waters of the Taiwan Straits makes it a suitable habitat for a variety of cetaceans (whales, dolphins, and porpoises). Additionally, the area's rich fishing grounds attract fish, which in turn, attract dolphins for feeding.

Sadly, Pingtan also experiences a relatively high number of cetacean strandings compared to other parts of Fujian province. East Asian harbor porpoises, locally called "sea pigs," are the most common species to strand.

Strandings can occur due to natural causes, such as illness or disorientation, or due to human activities. When strandings occur, immediate action is crucial.

Locals are advised to contact the local authorities (or call the government hotline 12345) to report stranded animals.

Experts emphasize that all cetaceans in Chinese waters are protected animals. Disturbing, harming, or taking any action with a live or dead stranded animal is illegal.

While waiting for professional help, people can assist stranded dolphins by keeping their bodies upright and their blowholes clear of water. Dousing the animal with water can also help prevent dehydration.
