Pingtan, a rising international tourism island off China' s Fujian Province, is set to revolutionize urban travel with the introduction of the province's first Super Virtual Rail Train SRT, currently undergoing testing. Slated for operation in May, the SRT is not just an upgrade in public transportation but a testament to the tourism island's commitment to innovation and sustainability.

The SRT features a 32-meter carriage, accommodating up to 300 passengers and reaching speeds of 70 kilometers per hour - four times the capacity of a standard bus. The spacious interior, complete with seating and a dedicated wheelchair area, ensures a comfortable journey for all, while the sleek, metro-like design promises a smooth ride without the need for physical tracks.

"The SRT is a perfect blend of rail transit and bus technology, often referred to as 'the metro running on the streets,'" said Du Qiumao, a technical expert from CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive Co., Ltd. "It offers the stability of rail transit and the flexibility of a bus, with the added benefit of route adjustments based on passenger demand."

The SRT's cutting-edge technology includes an "image recognition + Beidou positioning" system that allows the train to navigate along virtual tracks on the ground, enabling a semi-autonomous driving experience. This innovation not only enhances the city's image but also elevates the quality of service for both residents and visitors.

The train's energy efficiency is equally impressive. With a quick-charge system at the terminal stations, the SRT can cover up to 25 kilometers after just a 10-minute charge. An upgrade to hydrogen fuel technology could extend the range to over 200 kilometers, making it an eco-friendly choice for long-distance travel.

Safety and reliability are at the forefront of the SRT' s design, highlighted by its dual cab feature. "The train doesn't need to turn around; simply switch to the other cab for reverse operation. In case of an emergency on one end, the other can take over," explained Du Qiumao.

Trial runs are scheduled for May, with the SRT operating between Longwangtou Ocean Park and Beigang Village, adding a new dynamic to Pingtan's digital urban transportation development. For those eager to experience the future of travel, free trial rides are available for booking now.
