A cohort of 21 journalists from 18 countries, part of the "China Up Close" Fujian tour, embarked on an enlightening journey to Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone (Pingtan CPZ), a region teeming with historical significance and cultural richness.

On May 21, the journalists were welcomed to the International Research Center for Austronesian Archaeology based in Pingtan, where they delved into the origins and development of the Austronesian culture. The visit allowed them to immerse themselves in the prehistoric Fujian-Taiwan culture, offering a unique perspective on the region's deep historical roots.

Mareva Cameron, a reporter from the Cook Islands, expressed her newfound understanding of the historical ties linking her ancestors to Pingtan. "We are all proud to see how islands met years ago in Pingtan, and to feel the close cultural connections between island nations," she said.

Ibrahim Hulail from the Maldives shared a personal connection, having discovered a porcelain fragment in his country that mirrored those found in Pingtan. "It's possible that my ancestors also came from China," he mused, suggesting a tangible link across the seas.

Leota Marc John Membrere of Samoa's Savali Newspaper was equally captivated, contemplating the origins of his ancestors in Pingtan. "Who would have thought that my ancestors could be from Pingtan?" he remarked, highlighting the profound impact of the visit.

The journalists then proceeded to the Pingtan Taiwan Entrepreneurship Park, where they gained insights into the pilot zone's achievements in Taiwan exchanges, further deepening their understanding of the region's commitment to cultural and economic collaboration across the Taiwan Straits.

Chen Xunming, deputy director of the Administrative Committee of Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone, extended a warm welcome to the journalists. He highlighted Pingtan's advantageous geographical location, its role as a bridge for Fujian-Taiwan cooperation, and its status as China's second international tourism island. Chen encouraged the journalists to share the stories of Pingtan with the world, showcasing its beauty and progress.
