A groundbreaking collaboration has materialized in the form of the nation's first cross-Straits youth ecological protection site, launched on July 30 in Pingtan, the mainland's closest place to the island of Taiwan. This initiative, named the Zhuyukou Pingtan-Taiwan Youth Ecological Protection Site, marks a significant milestone in fostering environmental stewardship and cross-Straits cooperation.

The project, with an estimated investment ranging from 1.5 to 2 million yuan, aims to harness approximately 200 mu of wetlands and aquaculture ponds. It seeks to integrate Taiwan's expertise in species conservation and ecological restoration, thereby contributing to the rejuvenation and safeguarding of Pingtan's fragile ecosystems.

During a recent signing ceremony, the Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone Hairou Marine Cultural Exchange Center and the Wild Bird Society of Taipei inked a strategic partnership agreement. The alliance will serve as a springboard for regular ecological conservation, empowering cross-Straits youth volunteers to collaborate on initiatives that advance ecological protection.

Over two dozen representatives from conservation organizations on both sides of the Straits gathered at the site, engaging in fieldwork and discussions on the similarities and differences of wetlands, ecological restoration, and technological advancements.

Given the geographical proximity and ecological similarities shared by Fujian and Taiwan, the establishment of this protection site aligns with national policies aimed at fostering cross-Straits integration. The National Forestry and Grassland Administration's recent measures to support ecosystem and biodiversity conservation collaborations between Fujian and Taiwan further underscore the importance of this endeavor.

Zhuyu Lake, a vital ecological wetland in Pingtan, is renowned as a critical wintering ground for endangered species like the black-faced spoonbill and numerous wild waterbirds. Its pristine condition and ecological significance make it an ideal location for implementing conservation efforts.

"Zhuyu Lake is a picturesque haven, ideal for scientific research," expressed Chen Shihong, director of the Wild Bird Society of Taipei. "We have extensive experience in nature education and bird conservation in Taiwan, and we are eager to share these practices with our counterparts in Fujian, jointly advancing wetland conservation initiatives."

With a detailed action plan in place, the Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone Hairou Marine Cultural Exchange Center, in collaboration with the Wild Bird Society of Taipei, intends to embark on a comprehensive program encompassing bird conservation, monitoring station establishment, and cleanup efforts. Additionally, they aim to foster nature-based education and family-oriented research experiences, thereby achieving a harmonious balance between ecological preservation and sustainable development.

"This initiative represents a novel mode of collaboration in ecological protection between Fujian and Taiwan," remarked Lai Wensheng, deputy director of the Fujian Provincial Wild Animal and Plant Protection Center. "It not only fosters harmony between humans and nature in the region but also catalyzes the exchange of young talents dedicated to ecological conservation, offering fresh perspectives and innovative approaches to endangered species protection."
