Pingtan ushers in fishing season with "first fish" auction for charitable start
en.ptnet.cn | Updated:2024-08-21 | Lin Kongbo, StephanieAs the first wave of seafood returned to Pingtan's shores, marking the opening of the annual fishing season, an extraordinary auction for the coveted "first fish" took place at Dong'ao Fisherman's Wharf on August 17. This traditional event not only heralded the abundance of the ocean but also served as a platform for charity, weaving together culture and philanthropy.
The spotlight was on three hefty specimens: a 14.5-kilogram grouper, a matching 14.5-kilogram brown croaker, and an impressive 16.8-kilogram grouper. These fish, caught as the first haul after lifting this year's moratorium, symbolized the joy of renewed fishing activities and the fishermen's hope for a bountiful harvest. As the auction began, bidders eagerly raised their paddles, and the fish were eventually sold for 5,200 yuan, 4,000 yuan, and 4,800 yuan, respectively.
"The 'first fish' is a symbol of good luck and prosperity," remarked Zhong Xing'en, a Pingtan resident who secured the 14.5-kilogram grouper for 5,200 yuan. "I participated in the auction hoping to share in this auspicious beginning."
The successful bidders hosted a "first fish feast," sharing their acquisitions with attendees, allowing everyone to partake in the bounty of the sea. Proceeds from the auction were donated to a local charity foundation, with plans to use the funds for initiatives supporting left-behind children, children in distress, and educational and welfare programs.
"The donated funds will empower these young individuals, encouraging them to lead positive and optimistic lives," stated Yan Ying, deputy director of the Pingtan Philanthropism Disability Assistance Volunteer Service Center.
