On September 2, Pingtan, Fujian, was the center of attention as it hosted the grand finale of the 23rd Chinese Bridge - Chinese Proficiency Competition for Foreign College Students. Belgian contestant He Jieming emerged victorious in a thrilling competition, claiming the prestigious global championship.

The event, guided by the Ministry of Education of the PRC and Fujian Provincial People's Government and organized by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation, drew a remarkable global audience. Approximately 55,000 university students from 138 countries and 161 regional qualifiers converged on the stage, with only the top competitors advancing to the final rounds.

During the ceremony, key dignitaries including Fujian provincial governor Zhao Long and vice minister of Education and director of the State Language Commission Chen Jie addressed the gathering. Governor Zhao emphasized the pivotal role of language in fostering understanding, quoting President Xi Jinping who highlights that "Language is the best key to understanding a country." He encouraged young people worldwide to learn Chinese and carry the beauty of China and Fujian back home, fostering a shared future for humanity.

Meanwhile, Chen Jie underscored Chinese's cultural significance, describing it as "one of the world's oldest languages, carrying thousands of years of Chinese history and culture." He highlighted the transformative power of the Chinese Bridge, stating that over its 23-year history, it has attracted over 1.7 million participants from over 160 countries, becoming a platform for showcasing language proficiency, artistic talents, and fostering friendships.

The final competition unfolded in four captivating rounds, each designed to elicit emotional connections and cultural insights. In the thrilling finale, He Jieming and Venezuelan competitor An Lihua engaged in a neck-and-neck battle, with He ultimately triumphing through his rich knowledge and composure.
