On the morning of September 16th, the 2024 "Ocean Cup" Pingtan China International Cycling Open Race took off amidst the breathtaking scenery of Pingtan. This event was more than just a race; it was a celebration of sportsmanship that spanned the Straits and united the two sides of the Taiwan Straits.
The competition saw the participation of five UCI Professional Continental Teams, fifteen high-level club teams, and numerous cycling enthusiasts. It was not only a showcase of speed and passion, but also a gathering of hearts and a melting pot of cultures.
The race attracted attention for its challenging yet stunning course, which was newly upgraded to encompass 87 kilometers of the island's circumference. From the azure sea and sky to the rugged coastline, and from the fishing boats at dusk to the golden sands, the course offered a panoramic experience of Pingtan's natural beauty to the two thousand competitors from home and abroad.
Taiwan's professional cyclist, Zhang Zhisheng, praised the event, saying, "The racetrack is not only picturesque but also quite challenging. The way this event is organized, the routes, and the competition level are getting better every year. Although we may not be at the forefront regarding overall competitiveness, this race is an excellent opportunity for our team to hone its skills for the future."
Meng Shude, a member of the Pingtan International Tourism Island Continental Team, expressed his admiration for the location, "We've acclimated to the track in advance, so we're quite familiar with it. I think Pingtan might be the most beautiful city in the country." He also mentioned his future plans, "I will participate in more national and international competitions, representing Pingtan's team to promote Pingtan's culture and tourism, and aim for even better results."

The 2024 "Ocean Cup" was upgraded to an international C-class event in China, with the racecourse offering a comprehensive experience of Pingtan's scenic spots. Petr Rikunov from the Chengdu Continental Team was the first to cross the finish line, securing the title in the men's road cycling elite group. He said, "The event execution was excellent, a pleasant surprise. I enjoyed the race." It was Petr's first visit to Pingtan, and he found it to be a beautiful place, perfect for both cycling and vacationing.
The "Ocean Cup," established in 2014, has become one of the benchmark cycling events in China. It is part of the World Ocean Day and the National Ocean Awareness Day activities hosted in Pingtan. The event not only allows cycling enthusiasts to savor the "pristine + modern" island scenery of Pingtan International Tourism Island but also showcases the boundless charm and vitality of Pingtan to the world.
Zhao Xianlin, general manager of Huati Events (Beijing) Sports Management Co., Ltd., shared his insights on the event's future, "This year's competition has seen an overall upgrade in the level of competition. We aim to provide cyclists with a better experience through the event and look forward to an even more exciting 'Ocean Cup' in the future. We will work to bring top domestic and international events and our own created events to Pingtan, allowing them to take root and flourish."
