Shanglou village, nestled in the urban-rural fringe of Pingtan, an island off E China's Fujian province, stands as a symbol of cross-Straits unity and national cohesion. Recently, the village received national recognition for its exemplary efforts in fostering a closer bond between the people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits.

Cultural Roots and Shared Heritage

Shanglou, with a population of 1,801, including 757 ethnic minorities, has a rich cultural heritage that transcends geographical boundaries. As part of Pingtan, the only comprehensive pilot zone for Taiwan-related affairs on the Chinese mainland, the village has been at the forefront of cross-Straits integration initiatives.

Since 2016, the village has appointed village leaders from Taiwan as community planners, a unique approach that has paved the way for deeper Taiwan involvement in local governance. This collaboration has led to the establishment of various services, such as social work and psychological counseling, that cater to both residents and visiting Taiwan compatriots.

Economic Cooperation and Cultural Exchange

Beyond cultural exchanges, Shanglou has fostered economic cooperation through innovative initiatives. It has transformed traditional stone houses into a showcase for Taiwanese products and social gatherings, known as the "Loutai Hui" (meaning "Meeting of Shanglou and Taiwan"), which has generated additional revenue for local entrepreneurs.

Additionally, the village has established a service station dedicated to assisting Taiwan compatriots and businesses with administrative approvals and public services, facilitating seamless integration into the local economy.

Global Connections and Ancestral Roots

Shanglou, with its historical significance as a possible origin of the Austronesian family, has attracted international visitors interested in tracing their ancestral roots. The village has leveraged this connection by hosting international delegations and establishing a cultural and creative center dedicated to the Austronesian.

Building a Harmonious Multi-Ethnic Community

Shanglou has actively cultivated a multi-ethnic environment where people of different backgrounds live, learn, and work together. Through initiatives like "National Unity and Progress Propaganda Month" and community outreach programs, the village has fostered a strong sense of belonging and shared values among its residents.

Moreover, the village has invested heavily in infrastructure and community services, including a modernized service center and a smart village platform for public safety. These efforts have significantly enhanced the quality of life for all residents, regardless of their ethnic backgrounds.
