Pingtan, a rising international tourism island in China, hosted the 2024 International Island Forum "Lan Carbon" Eco-Product Launch on November 4. The event marked a milestone in Pingtan's commitment to sustainable development and carbon neutrality. Pingtan is abbreviated as "Lan" in Chinese, translated in English as "mist" or "haze," particularly referring to mist or light cloud that often envelops mountains.

The "Lan Carbon" eco-products, which include both forest (green carbon) and marine (blue carbon) carbon sinks, were unveiled during the forum. These virtual, digital products are designed to help individuals, organizations, and businesses offset their carbon emissions, contributing to achieving carbon neutrality or "zero-carbon" goals.

"Lan Carbon" allows citizens and tourists to voluntarily purchase carbon sinks through the "Pingtan Lan Carbon" mini-program at 1 yuan for every 10 kilograms of carbon sink. After purchase, buyers receive corresponding points and carbon sink certificates, which can be used to enjoy discounts on scenic spot tickets and tourism products. Zheng Mingjuan, an official from the Economic Development Bureau of Pingtan, said, "Pingtan is exploring the realization of the value of 'Lan Carbon' eco-products, aiming to promote an ecological compensation and protection mechanism that reflects the value of carbon sinks."

Meng Bingzhan, deputy general manager and chief dual carbon officer of Beijing Zhongchuang Carbon Investment Technology Co., Ltd., commented, "'Lan Carbon' project is conducive to stimulating tourists to practice green and low-carbon concepts, helping Pingtan's ecological 'high appearance' to transform into 'high value'."
