Every spring and summer, the waters of Pingtan, southeast China's Fujian province, transform into a dreamlike spectacle as the enchanting Blue Tears illuminate the night. This natural wonder, resembling stardust spilling into the sea, has captivated countless travelers and fueled a unique cultural tourism industry. As the 2025 Blue Tears season quietly begins, here's a complete guide to experiencing this breathtaking display.

The Science Behind Blue Tears

Blue Tears are a bioluminescent phenomenon caused by the presence of marine plankton, primarily Noctiluca scintillans (sea sparkle) and Vargula hilgendorfii (sea fireflies). From March to June, Noctiluca scintillans create fleeting blue ripples, while from July to August, sea fireflies produce a more persistent and granular glow. The intensity of Blue Tears is classified into five levels, with the highest level transforming the entire sea into a shimmering galaxy.

In recent years, Pingtan's Blue Tears have frequently gone viral. According to researchers at the Ministry of Natural Resources' Island Research Center, Pingtan's unique hydrological conditions make it a hotspot for this phenomenon, particularly in Changjiang'ao, Tannan Bay, and Dongmei Village.
