Pingtan strengthens logistics chains as a thriving trade hub

Early spring has brought promising developments for Pingtan's logistics industry. Recently, China's National Development and Reform Commission announced the latest adjustments to the national logistics hub network, recognizing Pingtan as a newly designated "Commercial Service-Oriented National Logistics Hub."

Building a Robust Logistics Network

Pingtan's rise as a key logistics hub is no coincidence. Leveraging its strategic location as a gateway to Taiwan, the region has actively advanced its "Logistics+" strategy. By modernizing facilities and optimizing customs clearance processes, Pingtan has strengthened its logistics infrastructure, seamlessly integrating trade and industry.

From expanding logistics chains to fostering industrial innovation, Pingtan has established a modern logistics system that enhances connectivity with Taiwan and beyond. "We are creating a smooth pathway where logistics drive trade, and trade, in turn, fuels industrial growth," said an official from the Pingtan Comprehensive Pilot Zone.

Speeding Up Trade Routes

On the evening of March 3, the vessel "Huahang 3" set sail from Pingtan's Jinjing Port, carrying 13 shipping containers filled with e-commerce parcels bound for international markets. Declared by Liantai Cross-border E-Commerce (Fujian) Co., Ltd., the shipment reached Taiwan's Taipei Port the next day, was transported to Taoyuan Airport by road, and then flown to Europe and the United States—all within 24 hours.

"The integration of sea and air transport allows for greater flexibility and speed, significantly improving service efficiency," said Luo Xiangyue, the company's general manager. "This model has led to an explosion in demand, with our sea-air shipments exceeding 3.6 million orders in 2024 alone, valued at over 733 million yuan."

Pingtan has intensified efforts to enhance cross-Straits cargo routes, with three regular direct freight sailings to Taiwan operating weekly. With stable shipping lines and streamlined customs procedures—such as remote intelligent sealing and bonded e-commerce return centers—Pingtan continues to refine its logistics services and boost foreign trade.

Expanding Logistics Infrastructure

A visit to Pingtan's Cross-Border E-Commerce Park reveals a bustling scene—robots swiftly sorting packages while workers efficiently load shipments. This cutting-edge facility, with an investment of approximately 749 million yuan and spanning 228 mu, serves as a crucial hub for international trade. Hosting major e-commerce players such as Tmall, JD.com, and Pinduoduo, the park processes an average of 67,000 bonded import orders daily.

"Robust logistics infrastructure is key to high-quality economic development," noted an official from the Economic Development Bureau. "By accelerating project implementation and enhancing policy support, we are transforming Pingtan into a global trade hub."

Several trade and logistics parks—including the Aoqian Bonded Logistics Park, Pingtan Cross-Border E-Commerce Park, and Bafang Logistics Park—now cater to a variety of business needs, from bonded warehousing to customs clearance.

Strengthening Supply Chains

With its strategic location and strong port capabilities, Pingtan has emerged as a key player in global trade. However, as logistics competition intensifies, the region is focusing on strengthening its supply chain and expanding business opportunities.

A prime example of this is Pingtan's foray into the "Logistics+Bonded" model. In October, under Pingtan Customs' supervision, eight race cars and specialized equipment from Taiwan were successfully imported for a high-profile drift racing event. To facilitate the process, customs officials devised a tailored clearance plan, ensuring seamless transportation from the port to the racetrack.

"This initiative demonstrates Pingtan's efficient bonded logistics," said Fu Zhiyuan, deputy director of Pingtan Customs' Jinjing Office. "By streamlining clearance, inspections, and re-export procedures, we provided a hassle-free experience for event organizers."

Capitalizing on this momentum, Pingtan is engaging with leading automotive companies, including China Automotive Engineering Research Institute and Taiwan Bor-Chuann Ent. Co., Ltd., to develop a comprehensive logistics network for modified car imports and exports. Plans are also underway to establish bonded storage and maintenance facilities near the Ruyi Lake International Circuit.

Pingtan Cold Chain Logistics Park under construction

Meanwhile, the region is addressing challenges in cold chain logistics, a crucial factor in expanding cross-Straits agricultural and seafood trade. Construction is progressing on a modern cold chain logistics park designed to integrate warehousing, processing, and distribution, ensuring efficient delivery of fresh produce to consumers across China.
