Pingtan, located off the coast of Fujian province and the closest place on the mainland to the island of Taiwan, is celebrated as China's second international tourism island.
The performance plunged the audience into a magnificent mythical world, telling the story of a "loong" (Chinese dragon) prince, "King Junshan," and a sea maiden, "Pingtan Blue," who fall in love and join forces to protect their island home from invaders and natural disasters.
Dancers used powerful and fluid movements to create stunning visual metaphors of the sea, waves, and mystical spirits. The performance reached a visual climax with a high-tech stage representation of Pingtan's famous "Blue Tears," a natural phenomenon where the sea glows with a mesmerizing blue light. The production also artfully weaves in local cultural elements, including folk music and ancient combat drills, resonating deeply with local audience members.
Lead dancer Zhu Fengwei expressed, "To perform 'King Junshan' on the stage in the story's homeland feels very familiar and intimate"
The play has already toured over 100 cities across China to critical acclaim, and the Pingtan premiere resonated powerfully
Director Yang Liping emphasized the production's unique essence: "'Pingtan Impression' is tailor-made for this island. Its depth, authenticity, and cultural spirit are distilled directly from Pingtan's folk heritage and the shared traditions across the Taiwan Straits."
