Pingtan, a coastal city in Fujian province and the closest mainland location to the island of Taiwan, serves as a key hub for cross-Straits integration. It is also China's second international tourism island, following Hainan. Recently, local athlete Wu Weikang won a silver and a bronze medal in taekwondo poomsae for China at the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games.

The team poomsae event saw Wu and his Chinese teammates aim higher. After the first round, they trailed the strong South Korean team by a noticeable margin, but they refused to be deterred. In the crucial second round, the Chinese team delivered a nearly flawless performance, earning the highest score of the day at 9.132. Despite this impressive effort, they narrowly lost to South Korea by just 0.08 points, taking home the silver medal.
