5th IM Film Festival set for September 5-7 in Pingtan

With the theme "Wind Has Its Own Direction," the festival highlights how young creators are connecting across the seas with sincerity and weaving possibilities for the future. The event will feature five major sections: Competition, Talent Development, Screenings, Forum, and Activities, including special screenings, exhibitions, masterclasses, and open lectures for the public.
This year's festival promises a more diverse lineup. A record 6,021 short films have been submitted to the main competition. The newly launched "Future Is Now: AI-Generated Content"section, jointly launchedwith ByteDance's Jimeng AI platform, will showcase 30 AI films selected from 3,443 entries. Participation from universities in Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan, and overseas has risen by over 40% compared to last year, underscoring the growing vitality of Chinese youth cinema. For the first time, students from Taiwan will join the festival's 72-Hour Extreme Filmmaking Challenge.
In addition, the festival is collaborating with Douyin Vlog on the special program "Filminga New Kind of Vlog." To date, the initiative has received over 400,000 submissions, generating more than 16 billion views across platforms. A jury featuring renowned figures in the industry including Chen Lingzhen, Mao Jian, Qian Tiantian, Tuoluo, and Zhou Hao will engage creators in a dialogue on "how life should be expressed." Thirty selected content creators will travel to Pingtan to receive joint honors from Douyin and the IM Film Festival.
