Pingtan's new school set to open this autumn with innovative 'light culture'

Pingtan, a coastal county in Fujian Province and the mainland's closest point to the island of Taiwan, serves as a key pilot zone for cross-Straits integration and ranks as China's second international tourism island after Hainan. This autumn, a new educational landmark is set to open its doors here-the new campus of Longshan Primary School, a key 2025 public welfare project aimed at enhancing local education.

The state-of-the-art sports and arts center at the new campus

Spanning 56.12 mu (about 37,413 square meters), the campus comes equipped with state-of-the-art facilities including a sports and arts hall, an all-weather playground, a library, and various specialized classrooms. Final adjustments to teaching equipment are scheduled to wrap up around August 20, paving the way for the September opening.

At the heart of the school's philosophy lies the "Light Culture," embodied by its motto "Enlighten for Rejuvenation, Act for Goodness." The institution aims to foster four key qualities in students: a warm heart, a wise mind, a healthy body, and brave actions. This vision is woven into the campus experience, guiding students through a "journey of light" -from seeking knowledge (exploring light), to collaborating (gathering light), to growing (becoming light), and finally to serving society (spreading light).

Lush green belts within the main building complex infuse the campus with vibrant energy.

The campus design blends order and flexibility, with a central axis organizing main buildings and interspersed courtyards creating dynamic spaces. Teaching buildings feature flat roofs, a design choice that reduces wind resistance, ensures stability, and leaves room for future rooftop greening.

Connecting corridors link the teaching buildings seamlessly, fostering easy movement across the campus

A standout feature is the interconnected corridor system, linking nine teaching buildings into a seamless network. These corridors are more than just passageways-they serve as "immersive classrooms" with distinct themes. Students can explore classics in the Chinese Studies Corridor, uncover scientific wonders in the Science Corridor, or connect with local heritage in the Pingtan Customs Corridor, among others dedicated to calligraphy, painting, paper-cutting, photography, and health education. "The corridors make moving between buildings easy regardless of the weather, and every corner has a story to tell and a lesson to teach," notes Wei Fang, a teacher at the school.

Teachers express enthusiasm about the new facilities. Zhuang Chanjuan, with 20 years of teaching experience, says, "I'm excited to use these new resources to make classes more engaging." Weng Qiteng, a 36-year veteran educator, reflects on Pingtan's educational progress: "We've gone from just having schools to having quality schools, and this campus is a perfect example."

Parents share similar optimism. "It's great to have such a good school right here in our neighborhood," says Ms. Chen, whose child will attend the school.

The campus is designed to support the "Education for Goodness" initiative, which integrates curriculum, classrooms, activities, environment, clubs, and evaluation systems. Its "5+1" curriculum covers morality, intellect, physical fitness, aesthetics, labor, and creativity, aiming to provide a well-rounded education for all students.
