China's eVTOL leader to boost Pingtan's low-altitude economy

Pingtan, an island off the coast of Fujian Province and the closest mainland location to Taiwan Island, serves as a comprehensive pilot zone for cross-Straits integration. It is also China's second international tourism island following Hainan. Beyond its roles in tourism and cross-Straits exchanges, the region has recently emerged as a critical test site for advancing China's low-altitude economy, thanks to its unique natural conditions.

From August 13 to 28, Feihong Aviation Technology—a leading domestic manufacturer of eVTOLs (electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft)—conducted a series of wind resistance tests in Pingtan using its flagship model, the V2000CG Keruiou. Over the two-week period, the aircraft completed more than 20 test flights in challenging conditions, with average wind speeds exceeding 10 meters per second and gusts reaching up to 16 meters per second. Despite these harsh conditions, the V2000CG Keruiou maintained stable takeoffs, cruises, and mission executions, demonstrating its reliability and airworthiness in complex weather.

Pingtan's value as a test site lies in its rare meteorological features: the island records an annual average wind speed of over 8.4 meters per second, creating a natural environment ideal for validating the performance of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). This strong, consistent wind allows for rigorous testing of critical capabilities like UAVs' wind resistance, corrosion resistance (due to the coastal location), and overall stability—factors essential for the safe development of the low-altitude economy.

These tests are part of Pingtan's broader push to build an "extreme weather application testing scenario system" and precede the upcoming release of the Pingtan All-Space Unmanned System and Low-Altitude Economy Industry Plan 2025–2035. To support this vision, the Pingtan Cultural Tourism Group is leading efforts to deploy low-altitude infrastructure and develop four key application scenarios extreme weather test flights, comprehensive patrols, island logistics, and low-altitude tourism.

"We designed these tests to put the V2000CG Keruiou through real-world extreme conditions, and Pingtan's wind environment provided the perfect setting," said a spokesperson from Feihong Aviation Technology. "Completing over 20 stable flights in winds up to 16 meters per second isn't just a success for our aircraft—it proves that we can build eVTOLs capable of handling the unpredictable weather challenges of real operations."

A representative from the Pingtan Cultural Tourism Group added, "Pingtan's natural advantages make us uniquely positioned to support the low-altitude economy. Our work on infrastructure and application scenarios isn't just about testing—it's about turning our region into a hub where new low-altitude technologies can be validated and deployed."

The successful completion of the V2000CG Keruiou tests marks a key step in Pingtan's efforts to leverage its natural resources for low-altitude economic development, with the tests themselves serving as a model for how regional strengths can support national technological advancement in the sector.
