Cluster of old stone houses

Pingtan Island, a coastal gem witnessing the changes of time in Fujian, is known for its unique stone house clusters that carry the island's rich cultural memories. Today, a group of young dreamers has breathed new life into these aged buildings, transforming them into poetic residences and trendy social hubs.

Lanwo Homestay, a haven for tranquility, retains the soul of its original stone walls washed with a coat of white paint. Shen Hengqing, homestay manager, recalled, "When I first saw this house, images of a large lawn and an endless sea view popped into my mind." The widened windows let in ample sunlight, making the texture of the ancient stone walls flicker in the light and shadow. Chen Ting, a tourist from Hangzhou, reflected: "The homestay is quiet and comfortable. Waking up to the shimmering sea in the morning translates to happiness."

Unlike the serene homestay, Yuhai Café blooms with vitality as a lively place of gathering for the community. Its mottled stone walls, awakened by high-pressure water guns, proudly bear their rough texture, with whispers of ancient shell ash still nestled in the seams. The combination of original stone walls, modern metal components and warm wooden tables and chairs creates a strong visual contrast. The café preserves the classic "one entrance and two courtyards" layout of old stone houses, with the front yard as a sunlit leisure area and the middle yard filled with rich coffee aroma. Zhang Xin, a tourist from Jiangsu, said with a smile, "It's very distinctive. I have recommended it to many friends and hope they can come here to experience it too."

Surprise Café stands out with its rare retro style on the island. Xue Li, manager, was attracted by the house's frame structure that allows room for imagination. To avoid homogenization, she completely opened up the original structure and carefully designed the movement and mood of the space. Chen Liling, a local resident of Pingtan, shared, "You can hardly find structures with retro design in Pingtan. The decoration here is perfect for taking photos. Every time I come, I can take many beautiful pictures—it's very photogenic."

These transformed old stone houses not only showcase the charm of traditional architecture but also become new landmarks for travel and socializing, blending history with modern life. Thus, the island's heritage is gently remade. The soul of the island is felt in the cool stone, seen in the dappled light, and heard in the quiet hum of shared contemporary life.
