Pingtan Island, a picturesque island in Fujian Province facing the Taiwan Straits, is famous for its stunning coastal scenery and the magical "blue tears" natural phenomenon. A local relief mural artist named Guo Xiaofang is using her paintbrushes to add artistic warmth to this island, turning empty walls into vibrant landscapes and helping local women find new careers through art.

Guo Xiaofang learned relief painting in Guangzhou and returned to Pingtan in 2023. She began sharing her creation process on Douyin, painting 3D relief works on old walls. Her first public project was a sunflower relief mural, which kickstarted her artistic career. Despite her fear of heights, she overcame difficulties to complete large-scale murals for homestays, scenic spots and villages across the island. She also created glowing "blue tears" cultural products using local shells, pine cones and starfish, letting tourists take Pingtan's romance home.
The wall painting has become a scenic spot in the village.
As demand grew, Guo founded Huashuo Art Studio and started teaching skills for free. She told her students, "As long as you are willing to learn, I will teach you everything I know without holding back." She provided hands-on training, especially for stay-at-home mothers, left-behind women and people with disabilities. Through a "training plus order recycling" model, her students can make handmade crafts at home and earn income, gaining confidence and self-worth.

Liu Ming, a short-video visual director, joined Guo's team to promote her art online. They focus on capturing genuine creative moments to share Pingtan's artistic charm. Guo now plans to build an "art village" on Pingtan, integrating intangible cultural heritage exhibitions, creative workshops and photo spots. She aims to make art a bridge between nature and humanity, turning Pingtan into a must-visit cultural destination for travelers.
