Pingtan, China's second International Tourism Island in Fujian Province facing the Taiwan Straits and known for its coastal scenery and growing sports tourism profile, is set to host a major local football fixture as its team prepares for a home debut in the Fujian Football City League (FJCL).
On the evening of April 25, the Pingtan team will play its first home match at the Pingtan Comprehensive Training Base Stadium. In the lead-up, the island has shifted into full preparation mode, with players, organizers and fans building momentum for the occasion.
Training has intensified since early April. On the pitch, sessions have focused on defensive positioning and smooth transitions between attack and defense, with coaches refining tactics in real time. Player Xue Xiang said the squad is fully committed: "We give our all in training and follow the coaches' instructions closely, aiming to reach peak condition for the match."
Practice matches have played a key role in sharpening performance. During a month-long training camp, Pingtan faced teams including Fujian Agriculture and Forestry University, Nan'an Women's Team and Fuqing City Team. The results have been evident, with noticeable improvements in defensive cohesion, coordinated coverage and overall team chemistry.
Behind the scenes, upgraded facilities are ensuring the team is match-ready. As the core venue for the Pingtan division, the stadium has undergone a comprehensive facelift. Expanded parking, refurbished seating, new signage, high-mast lighting and a large electronic screen are now in place, offering a fresh experience for spectators.
Beyond the pitch, Pingtan is integrating sports with tourism to enhance the event experience. New offerings include XR immersive viewing, a beachside football carnival, and themed travel routes that pair the match with island sightseeing, blending the island's natural charm with sporting excitement.
Public enthusiasm is also mounting. A cheer squad formed by local football fans has begun rallying support, with chants echoing across training grounds and online platforms alike. From digital campaigns to live fan support, the island is working to create a vibrant home atmosphere.
As kickoff approaches, the Pingtan team—made up largely of football enthusiasts from different walks of life—stands ready. Backed by home supporters, this "island squad" is eager to showcase its spirit and determination on familiar turf.
